Miniature hobbyist Joan Burdge designed her 25-room dollhouse based on a Victorian home near Rutland, Vermont. She created and furnished the house herself, a project that took her eight years. The furnishings include items from Burdge's own childhood, items she purchased, and items she made herself. Burdge's hobby embraces the best elements of play: "One thing I love about miniatures is the ingenuity . . . the creativity and the ingenuity. For me, that is the fun of it because I am not bound by someone else's ideas and thoughts. I just enjoy working things out for myself."
