Designed by Chris Wiggs in 1983, Polly Pockets were originally produced by Bluebird Toys of Swindon, England. They first appeared in stores in 1989. After a hostile takeover by Mattel in 1998, Polly Pockets were re-designed and marketed. Originally the dolls had stretchy clothing, but in 2003 Mattel started using magnets for their interchangeable outfits. Polly comes in a variety of playsets as well as other items, such as bed spreads and lunch boxes. After 170 reports to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and three injured children who received their injuries due to ingesting the magnets, Mattel recalled over 4 million of the magnet play sets.
