1970

Hot Wheels Sizzlers, introduced in 1970, took standard die-cast toy cars one step further. Each Sizzler model held its own tiny electric motor and rechargeable battery. A recharge at the "Juice Machine" or "Goose Pump" enabled another five frenetic minutes of 200 mile-per-hour (to scale) fun. Mattel's Sizzlers line, though successful, eventually lost its edge and the firm discontinued production. The 90-second recharge time, for a Sizzlers car, is often called "the longest minute and a half in a kid's life."
